Lumileds Lighting was formed in November 1999 as a joint venture between Philips Lighting and Agilent Technologies. It develops and markets LEDs. Upon Philips’ acquisition, Lumileds has become a business unit within Philips Lighting and is known as Philips Lumileds Lighting Company. March 31st 2015 80.1% of the company was acquired by a consortium led by GO Scale Capital. Following the transaction, the new company will continue under the name Lumileds, led by CEO Pierre-Yves Lesaicherre. Philips’ Lighting Solutions business will remain a customer of Lumileds and will continue the existing partnership. Philips terminated the proposed merger of Lumileds with GO Scale Capital and others on 23-January 2016 because of unspecified objections of the U.S. government. LUXEON is the trade name for high power LEDs that dissipate 1 watt or more. Models include LUXEON I, LUXEON III, LUXEON V, LUXEON K2, LUXEON Star, and LUXEON Rebel. They are available in many colors, including white. Competitors to Lumileds include Cree Inc., OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH, Seoul Semiconductor and Nichia Corporation.
